DivX VOD rentals expire in one of several ways, giving content owners control over all the specific parameters.

Personal computer - rentals expire by time.  A rental usually lasts between 2-30 days - it is up to the content owner to decide.

DivX Certified ® devices - new video can expire the old videos.  A user's new videos will cause the old videos to expire.  A product can hold up to eight rentals at a time.  If all eight rentals are filled, users must choose to remove one video in order to download new content.  In such a scenario, users can view a movie as often as they wish, for as long as they wish, until they choose a new rental to replace the old content.

DivX Certified ® devices - rentals can expire by views.  Users are granted a set number of views - generally defined as watching the video from start to finish.  Pausing, rewinding or fast forwarding the video does not result in additional views, but watching a portion of the video, then closing it and watching something else, would reduce the number of available views of the video by one.
